The WELL Building Standard is the world’s first comprehensive rating system focused exclusively on human health and well-being within built environments. Developed and administered by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), it comprehensively evaluates and enhances the positive impact of buildings on occupants across ten core concepts: Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind, and Community.

Achieving WELL certification serves not only as recognition of the building’s physical environment but also as a powerful testament to the project team’s deep commitment to occupant health and their dedication to creating a world-class space. The Shenzhen Centre’s attainment of this honor highlights its profound care for the well-being of students and faculty, reflecting the visionary outlook befitting a top-tier global institution.

As an educational institution dedicated to nurturing future leaders, the University of Hong Kong Business School Shenzhen Centre placed significant emphasis on the WELL certification project. From its inception, WELL standards were integrated into every phase—from spatial design and construction management to post-occupancy operations—striving to create a healthy learning and living environment that “breathes, thinks, and relaxes” for all students, faculty, and staff.

**Project Technical Analysis**

  • Exceptional Air Quality:
The Shenzhen Centre maintains exceptionally low indoor concentrations of PM2.5 and formaldehyde, ensuring respiratory safety for all occupants. Notably, indoor carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels are controlled at an ultra-low threshold of ≤6 ppm, far exceeding conventional building standards. This ensures sustained focus and comfort during extended periods of study and work.

  • Safe Drinking Water System:
In strict compliance with WELL standards, the Centre conducts comprehensive testing of drinking water for at least 34 parameters. Conveniently located drinking water facilities ensure easy access to safe and healthy hydration.

  • Optimized Natural Environment:
Through thoughtful design, the Centre maximizes the use of natural light and external views. Over 75% of regularly occupied spaces provide high-quality visual access to the outdoors, effectively reducing eye strain and enhancing mental well-being.

At this point, the WELL certification service provided by Junye Low Carbon for the University of Hong Kong has been successfully completed and has received high praise from the institution. Simultaneously, our LEED certification advisory work for the campus is progressing smoothly, with positive outcomes anticipated in the near future.

As the first higher education institution in China to achieve WELL Gold Certification, the Shenzhen Centre of the University of Hong Kong Business School has not only reached a significant milestone but also established a new starting point for its continuous pursuit of environmental excellence. Moving forward, the campus will deeply integrate health and sustainability into its operations, consistently enhancing the spatial experience to provide an even more supportive platform for the growth and development of its students and faculty.

Building on the global leadership in ESG research and practice of the University of Hong Kong Business School, the campus will continue to pioneer green and low-carbon development, setting a new benchmark for sustainable growth and healthy, people-centered environments in the Greater Bay Area and across the nation.
